This course covers the fatigue behaviour of metals from both a materials science perspective and through the lens of how microscopic structure drives macroscopic properties. Students gain understanding of how fatigue is characterized using mechanical, thermal, electrical, and magnetic measurement techniques and transducers.

Current theories of fatigue damage accumulation are examined alongside practical lifetime calculation methods. Each stage of the fatigue life cycle — crack initiation, crack propagation, and final fracture — is explored in depth, with a focus on the underlying mechanisms and the role that material defects play at each stage.

Furthermore, these fundamentals are linked to emerging additive manufacturing technologies, particularly with respect to complex composite hybrid structures. Basic knowledge of deep learning methods applied to experimental testing and data evaluation is also provided.
