In the present lecture, the fundamentals of nonlinear FEM will be explained and derived. For this purpose, the different types, such as material, structural and contact nonlinearities are discussed in detail. Additionally, the rigid-plastic, the elastic-plastic and the viscoplastic FEM will be introduced. The approaches are to consider special aspects for the use of FEM in forming technology. In the area of sheet metal forming, implicit and explicit solution methods are discussed, in the area of solid forming, Euler, Lagrange and ALE formulations are discussed, and in the area of hot forming, thermomechanical coupling is discussed. The grade is composed of a written exam including the lecture content and a simulation project, which deals with the FEM analysis of a given forming process.
