Latin America is a continent of contradictions and extremes. From the violent suppression of indigenous belief systems and the ambivalent role of the Catholic Church during colonization to liberation theology, right-wing populism, and contemporary indigenous struggles, these tensions are reflected in the role religion has played on the continent since colonization. This seminar traces how religious traditions have shaped nation-building, authoritarianism, democratization, and contemporary political struggles.
