Visual content such as films, YouTube videos, social media clips or a series, is a medium students are well versed in. It provides many windows to the world and teachers can use this to motivate, excite, and engage their students. Films motivate by providing multifaceted language input that reaches many different types of learners. In addition, students get excited by experiencing characters and situations and stories that connect them to the world or open up new ones. By getting students invested in a story, its players and its outcome, teachers can engage their students in a meaningful learning experience. In this course we will watch and discuss a variety of short films in order to develop a repertoire of cooperative learning methods to use in any grade level. We will learn how to implement these methods into lesson plans and how to tailor them to your specific learners and their needs. We will also debate criteria of good films for the ELT classroom.
