Thema des Seminars

Vor dem Hintergrund einer zunehmend wissensbasierten Gesellschaft nehmen Hochschulen eine immer zentralere Rolle in Wirtschaft und Gesellschaft ein. Ihre Relevanz für die wissenschaftliche, wirtschaftliche, soziale und kulturelle Entwicklung wird sowohl auf nationaler, als auch auf europäischer und supranationaler Ebene immer deutlicher herausgestellt.

Basierend auf organisationstheoretischen Ansätzen und theoretischen Ansätzen zu Wissensproduktion und -transfer sowie Innovation werden im Seminarverlauf folgende Fragen beantwortet: Welche Besonderheiten weist der Organisationstypus Hochschule im Vergleich zu privaten Unternehmen auf? Wie hat sich die Rolle der Hochschule in Wirtschaft und Gesellschaft aus historischer Perspektive verändert? Welche (externen) Anforderungen müssen Hochschulen heutzutage erfüllen? Welche Einflüsse haben Hochschulen auf wirtschaftlichen Entwicklungen und Innovation? Wie haben sich die akademische Wissensproduktion und die Steuerung von Hochschulen im Zuge sich verändernder Anforderungen gewandelt?

Lernziele

Nach Absolvieren des Seminars sollen Studierende in der Lage sein:

  1. Grundlegende Kenntnisse zur Hochschule als Organisation sowie ihrer Rolle in und Einflüsse auf Wirtschaft und Gesellschaft wiederzugeben und vor dem Hintergrund organisationstheoretischer Ansätze sowie theoretischer Ansätze zu Wissensproduktion, Wissenstransfer und Innovation zu interpretieren und zu beurteilen.
  2. Forschungsprobleme abzuleiten und Forschungsfragen zu erstellen.
  3. Strategien zur Beantwortung dieser Forschungsfragen zu entwickeln sowie diese eigenständig anzuwenden.

Organisation der Lehrveranstaltung

Die Veranstaltung findet ausschließlich in Kombination mit der Übung "Wissenschaftliches Arbeiten" statt. Die Teilnehmerzahl ist auf 20 Personen begrenzt. Das Lesen der Pflichtlektüren sowie die aktive Teilnahme werden bei allen Teilnehmenden vorausgesetzt. Für diese Veranstaltung besteht eine Anwesenheitspflicht.

Leistungsnachweise

  1. Regelmäßige aktive Teilnahme, Vorbereitung der Grundlagentexte.
  2. Mündlicher Vortrag der Zwischenergebnisse für die Seminararbeit (max. 15 Minuten) sowie Entwicklung von Diskussionsfragen und Moderation einer Diskussion zum Seminararbeitsthema.
  3. Verfassen einer Seminararbeit (ca. 3.000 Wörter).

Die Seminarsprache ist Englisch und die Präsentation muss in englischer Sprache gehalten werden. In Absprache mit den Lehrenden ist es jedoch möglich, die Seminararbeit in deutscher Sprache zu verfassen. Die Kenntnisse der englischen Sprache müssen ausreichend, aber nicht perfekt sein.

Content of the Seminar

The importance of knowledge intensive organizations has been underscored by policy makers across the world. Universities in particular are believed to play a key role for the future of national economies via knowledge production, transfer and commercialization. The seminar will introduce the main higher education governance and management trends in Europe and the US and shed light on the role of universities in national and regional innovation systems. The course will also introduce the key characteristics of university as a professional organization. Drawing on the theoretical models of national and regional innovation systems and organizational theories the course will point out the role of engaged university in fostering regional and national economies. Students will carry our research projects drawing on the latest theoretical and empirical evidence from Higher Education, Science and Technology Studies as well as Innovation Studies.

Organization

All students are expected to actively participate in the seminar. Each of the sub-topics covered in the seminar will have compulsory reading. The students are expected to read the provided literature and find additional sources, such as other relevant articles. The assignment will consist of a presentation and an individual written 5000 words paper on a given topic. The number of participants of this seminar is limited to 20.

Examination

The examination consists of a presentation of the assignment and paper. Participation in discussions and giving feedback to other students after their presentations will also be important.

Content of the Seminar

Fostering innovation is the goal of many governments as well as organizations in today's knowledge economies. The seminar will introduce and critically discuss organizational models for innovation and provide deeper insights into the main characteristics of innovation. The latest re­search results will identify the main antecedents of successful innovations and the role of institutional entrepreneurs in the process of innovation. The exercise will provide the space for practical application of the approaches to organizing innovation via the simulation game.
This seminar and exercise will inform students about the latest approaches of organizing innovation internationally. Students will critically reflect on the key findings of studies of innovation and will carry out a re­search proj­ect of their own on particular innovation. Si­mu­la­tion game will provide practical skills for organization of innovation.

Organization

The seminar will start with the lecture which will cover the main theoretical models for organizing innovation. The topics for assignments and the suggested literature will be presented and students will choose the topics. Each of the semi­nars will have a presentation from students followed by a discussion.
All students are expected to actively participate in the seminar. Each of the sub-topics covered in the seminar will have compulsory reading. It is expected that students will work on the assignment, present it and participate in the discussions. The assignment will consist of a presentation on a given topic and an individual written 5000 words paper on a given topic. The number of participants of this seminar is limited to 20.
The exercise will include a simulation game during which we will simulate innovation process in a professional organization.

Examinations

Seminar: 4 Credits; task for getting a grade: presentation of the assignment and seminar paper.
Exercise: 3.5 Credits; task for getting the grade: active participation in the exercise.


Projektseminar (WiSe 2022/23)
